Join us for our next Poetry Book Group meeting! In November, we’ll be reading An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo, the first Native American U.S. Poet Laureate. Copies are available at the second floor Welcome Desk.
You don’t need to be a poet or a poetry scholar to attend—just bring an open heart and an open mind. Harjo’s poems are accessible, emotional, and deeply connected to history, ancestry, and resilience.
In An American Sunrise, Harjo returns to her ancestral lands and opens a dialogue with the past. Drawing on tribal history, personal memory, and the enduring power of storytelling, this collection illuminates themes of survival, beauty, and justice. As the Los Angeles Review of Books notes, Harjo is “one of our finest—and most complicated—poets,” and this powerful collection continues her remarkable legacy.
