Necessary Trouble is Drew Gilpin Faust's newest book, a memoir detailing the experience of coming of age in a conservative Southern family in postwar America. Faust's 2008 work, This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War, delves into the extensive and transformative impact of death during the American Civil War, having resulted in an unprecedented scale of casualties and suffering.

 

Get to know the author: Faust is an American Historian and served as the first woman president of Harvard University, despite not having studied there. She has been ranked as one of the world's most powerful women by Forbes.
